The two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers, who have baseball’s best record at 54-30, extended their lead to 10 games over the Padres in the NL West.

The teams will meet again Thursday through Sunday at Dodger Stadium.

Manny Machado homered off Emmet Sheehan with one out in the fourth to tie it at 1. It was Machado’s 15th of the season.

King, who allowed Shohei Ohtani’s opposite-field RBI single to left with one out in the third, got into trouble immediately in the fifth when he issued a leadoff walk to Alex Freeland. He got Chuckie Robinson to line out but allowed the next four batters to reach.

Ohtani walked and Andy Pages was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Freeman fouled off three straight pitches before walking on the ninth pitch to bring in Freeland. Betts singled to center to bring in Ohtani and Pages for a 4-1 lead and chase King.

Betts hit a three-run homer in the nine-run sixth in Saturday night’s 15-3 win.

King (5-7) was coming off a 1-0 win against Atlanta on Monday night. Before that, he hadn’t won since beating the Dodgers 1-0 at home on May 18. The Dodgers followed a series-opening loss with two wins in each of their two series in San Diego this season.

Sheehan (4-5) bounced back after losing each of his past four starts. He held the Padres to one run and two hits in five innings, struck out five and walked two.

Edgardo Henriquez pitched the ninth for his first save.

Up next

Dodgers LHP Eric Lauer (3-5, 4.87 ERA) is set to oppose A’s LHP Gage Jump (3-1, 2.04) in Sacramento on Monday night.

The Padres haven’t announced a starter for Monday night at the Chicago Cubs.

Haeran Ryu wins the Women’s PGA Championship for her first major title /sports/2026/06/haeran-ryu-wins-the-womens-pga-championship-for-her-first-major-title/ Sun, 28 Jun 2026 23:22:04 +0000 /?p=29388226&preview=true&preview_id=29388226 CHASKA, Minn. (AP) 鈥 Haeran Ryu recovered from a rough start to secure her first career major title, winning the Women’s PGA Championship by two strokes over Ina Yoon on a windy Sunday at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Ryu shot a 2-under 70 to finish at 13-under 275 and become the sixth South Korean to win the event over the last 12 editions, flashing a big smile as she holed her last putt and friends ran out to douse her in celebration.

The 2023 LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year was also the first major champion in at least the last 60 years to rally from a 10-plus-shot deficit after the first round. Ryu opened Thursday with a 73 in a tie for 70th place, as Yoon shot a tournament-record 63.

Brooke Henderson and Dewi Weber tied for third at 10 under. Three Americans 鈥 Allisen Corpuz, Auston Kim and Alison Lee 鈥 tied for fifth place, six strokes behind Ryu.

Nelly Korda wrapped up a frustrating weekend on the greens with a 73 to finish in a four-way tie for eighth, failing to become the third women to win the first three majors of the season.

The course was closed for most of the morning while a thunderstorm moved through the Twin Cities metro area, dropping more than an inch of rain and pushing all of the tee times back by 3 1/2 hours while players tried to stay focused and loose. That left the greens extra soft and the air especially gusty, making many of Hazeltine鈥檚 notoriously long fairways even trickier.

From the rubble in Venezuela, an unexpected story of survival cuts through days of tragedy /world/2026/06/from-the-rubble-in-venezuela-an-unexpected-story-of-survival-cuts-through-days-of-tragedy/ Sun, 28 Jun 2026 23:19:48 +0000 /?p=29388044&preview=true&preview_id=29388044 LA GUAIRA, Venezuela (AP) 鈥 A mix of rescue teams and civilians on Sunday peered at a mountain of rubble almost indistinguishable from the other ruins lining swathes of the northern Venezuelan coast following two devastating earthquakes.

In the days since Wednesday’s devastating , search teams and locals had believed that there were no signs of life under the concrete mass in La Guaira state, one of the hardest-hit areas.

Then on Sunday came a burst of movement. A pair of dust-coated legs was pulled out of a hole by rescue teams from Virginia, France and Venezuela.

Teams gently carried the man from the structure where he had been trapped for four days, his body slack but still gripping his phone, onto a black tarp and administered an IV.

Then came his young son, pulled shirtless and almost unresponsive over a pack of hard-hat clad rescue workers with the words 鈥淔airfax County Urban Search & Rescue鈥 emblazoned on the backs.

鈥淪low, slow, gentle, gentle,鈥 chanted rescue teams in a mix of Spanish and English, as they passed the father and son through a crowd of onlookers into a nearby ambulance.

The teams burst out into applause days into search and rescue efforts, at a time that hope of finding survivors was dimming.

Associated Press journalists Juan Pablo Arraez and Mat铆as Delacroix were among the throng of people who witnessed the rescue.

On Sunday, Arraez said they were scouring the La Guaira region 鈥渢rying to see if we can see any miracles鈥 when they found the U.S. rescue teams and local civilians calmly working to pull the father and son out of the building.

鈥淎t this stage many begin to lose hope. You see that in their faces,鈥 Arraez said, as helicopters flew overhead. 鈥淲hen somebody makes it out alive, this father and son. It鈥檚 more than a glimpse, it鈥檚 real hope for people.鈥

The has been the greatest natural disaster the South American nation has faced in decades.

Authorities reported 1,450 people were dead on Sunday, with thousands more injured and many more missing.

The first 48 to 72 hours after a natural disaster are crucial to rescue efforts, though survival can be extended if people have access to food and water.

But small moments of optimism, solidarity and humanity like this have cut through almost overwhelming grief.

Venezuelan firefighters poured water into the mouth of a dust-covered dog peeking its head through cracks in the concrete.

After being trapped for 70 hours, one woman sat up on a stretcher, grinning and waving at cheering crowds as she was loaded on a gurney into an ambulance.

Grief and optimism clash in scramble to locate survivors 4 days after Venezuela earthquakes /world/2026/06/teams-scramble-to-locate-survivors-four-days-after-venezuela-earthquakes/ Sun, 28 Jun 2026 23:16:00 +0000 /?p=29387643&preview=true&preview_id=29387643 LA GUAIRA, Venezuela (AP) 鈥 Local and international rescue teams raced against the clock to pull survivors from the rubble in on Sunday, four days after shook the northern state of La Guaira.

The government reported 1,450 dead from the quakes Sunday afternoon as it faced growing criticism from Venezuelans that its response was inadequate and to rescue people buried under . Thousands more have been reported missing.

Even as the likelihood of finding people alive diminished with each passing hour, rescuers continued to free some survivors from mountains of debris, offering anguished families a sliver of hope. The first 48 to 72 hours after a natural disaster are crucial to rescue efforts, though survival can be extended if people have access to food and water.

Venezuela’s said Sunday night that even as the threshold passed, the search for survivors would continue. More than 2,600 rescue workers from around the world had arrived with trained search dogs and machinery, the government said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been incredibly hard work, but we鈥檙e going strong,鈥 said Jason Mercano, a civilian who was able to communicate with family buried under the rubble and was working with rescue teams to pull them out.

鈥淲e’ve never given up hope,鈥 he added.

More than 770 buildings partially or totally collapsed

Still, many Venezuelans are struggling to hold onto hope in an increasingly desperate situation. The that hit last Wednesday have left a trail of devastation. The U.N. said up to 6.8 million of Venezuela’s nearly 30 million residents may be affected by the earthquakes.

A layer of dust coated coastal communities, and as the stench of decomposing bodies spread, more people began to wear masks.

Authorities said Sunday that more than 770 buildings had totally or partially collapsed from the earthquakes, twice as many as were reported destroyed or damaged on Friday. The risk of further damage remains as aftershocks continued to shake Venezuela; quakes measuring 4.2 and 4.5 hit Sunday morning.

But rescue efforts in La Guaira 鈥 the hardest-hit area 鈥 appeared significantly more organized on Sunday as international rescue missions arrived en masse. In previous days, residents there had expressed frustration and anger about the level of response.

The government reported on state television that more than 14,000 members of the military and police are now patrolling La Guaira state, where access is blocked and special permits are required to enter.

Because of the chaos and shoddy cellphone service since the earthquakes, many Venezuelans have turned to non-governmental digital databases to report their loved ones as missing. More than 50,000 people were reported missing on one such database, though it is unclear how many have been found.

Optimism and grief mark La Guaira

Moments of optimism contrasted sharply with grief on Sunday.

Masses of people gathered around a mountain of debris watching as from a crack in the concrete, covered in dust and almost unresponsive. Helmet-clad teams pulled them on a black tarp and passed the two carefully through the crowd to an ambulance to hydrate them through an IV.

Rescue teams and onlookers burst into applause in a moment of relief, then continued working.

In another part of La Guaira, Helen Guedez and her mother were reeling. They had spent days trying to save her father Jes煤s from their apartment.

She felt a swell of hope when rescue teams from the U.S. had come to inspect the building and confirmed to them that her dad was still alive under the rubble. But they told the family that the building was too unstable to enter and rescue him, she said.

They left the scene, but Guedez said would continue to try and rescue their father without their assistance. She said they were now working with civilian volunteers and local miners to get him out.

鈥淲e’re not going to give up,” said Guedez. 鈥淭he rest of the team is willing to continue. They know there’s another way to get him out and they said they’re going to keep working until the very end.鈥

Despite the overwhelming demand for medical services and the shortage of supplies in Venezuela鈥檚 public health system, Domingo Luciani Hospital in the capital of Caracas coped with an influx of patients thanks to a flood of donations.

鈥淲e have tons of patients, but thank god, people have responded by bringing us a great deal of supplies,鈥 said Leomery P茅rez, an anesthesiologist at the hospital.

Authorities said they had treated more than 3,100 wounded people, including many with crush injuries.

A big challenge for Venezuela’s acting president

The disaster poses a significant challenge for acting President , the former vice president who took office in January after the U.S. capture and removal of then-President .

Since then, the U.S. government has played in increasingly powerful role in dictating the future of the South American nation. Venezuela has faced for more than a decade, and many people reject the legitimacy of .

The country now faces an even more difficult circumstances, said Ronal 搁辞诲谤铆驳耻别锄, researcher for the Bogot谩-based Venezuelan Observatory at the University of Rosario.

鈥淭here is political interference by the United States, the operational incompetence of a government that has driven the country into a complex humanitarian crisis and, all of the sudden, an earthquake in a place that lacks human capital and short-term resources to address the situation,鈥 he said.

Amy Pope, director general from International Organization for Migration, warned that displacement from Venezuela 鈥 where crisis has forced 8 million people to migrate over the past decade 鈥 was likely to increase as people seek safety.

搁辞诲谤铆驳耻别锄 on Sunday said she was setting up a special commission to assess the damage to homes to confirm whether it’s safe for people sleeping on the streets to return, adding that her government would also examine infrastructure damage. The search for life in the destruction, she said, would also continue.

鈥淭oday we recovered people who are still alive,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e always maintain hope.鈥

Este hombre est谩 en contra de la IA y sus ideas ganan popularidad; podr铆a ser un problema para Trump /news/2026/06/este-hombre-esta-en-contra-de-la-ia-y-sus-ideas-ganan-popularidad-podria-ser-un-problema-para-trump/ Sun, 28 Jun 2026 23:14:54 +0000 /?p=29388210&preview=true&preview_id=29388210 Cuando la pandemia diezm贸 el panorama de los eventos en vivo, Joe Allen 鈥減repar贸 un b煤nker de supervivencia sobre ruedas鈥 y emprendi贸 un nuevo camino profesional.

鈥淓st谩n furiosos.

Lovecraft, 鈥淎t the Mountains of Madness鈥.

鈥淭rump s铆 dice algunas cosas que los verdaderos simpatizantes como yo nos quedamos como: 鈥楪uau, 驴qu茅?鈥欌, afirm贸.

鈥淵 su legado depender谩 de eso鈥.

Eust谩quio’s foot delivers late strike for Canada鈥檚 first World Cup knockout win /sports/2026/06/eustaquios-foot-delivers-late-strike-for-canadas-first-world-cup-knockout-win/ Sun, 28 Jun 2026 23:04:35 +0000 /?p=29388193&preview=true&preview_id=29388193 INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) 鈥 The tension kept building between two teams making their first appearance in a World Cup knockout match. With no goals on the scoreboard, the minutes ticked down with extra time looming.

Then scored in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, and 1-0 on Sunday.

鈥淚 shot with everything I had,鈥 Eust谩quio said.

The party was on, for red-clad fans in the stands at SoFi Stadium and at watch parties across Canada, one of three World Cup hosts.

鈥淥verall, it鈥檚 pretty much a perfect knockout performance,鈥 right back Alistair Johnston said.

Hockey dominates Canada in the winter months. Now, summer belongs to the men’s national soccer team.

The country鈥檚 previous best men’s international result was winning CONCACAF Gold Cup championships in 1985 and 2000. The women’s Olympic team won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

“For Canadian sports history, it鈥檚 going to be a moment where you鈥檙e going to kind of know where you were when that moment happened,鈥 Johnston said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 something that is not lost on us. We know that not only are we writing history in Canadian soccer, but in Canadian sport, and that鈥檚 a magical thing.鈥

Just when it looked like 30 minutes of extra time was coming, Johnston’s pass to the right side was cleared to the edge of the box and found Eust谩quio, who drilled a clean strike into the bottom corner.

鈥淚t鈥檚 just a moment of magic and something just comes over your body,鈥 Johnston said. 鈥淵ou see Steph sprinting away and just the whole team sprinting. It鈥檚 one of those moments that you鈥檒l never forget.鈥

Eust谩quio became a Canadian hero in Los Angeles, where he played about 10 miles away in downtown for the MLS club LAFC. The 29-year-old midfielder was born in Canada and in his younger days played for Portugal, where his late parents were from.

Eust谩quio suffered back-to-back devastating blows when his mother died from brain cancer in 2023 and his father died of a heart attack in 2024. He remains close with his brother, Mauro, a former player and a coach in the Canadian Premier League.

鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 think of a more deserving human being in a group of incredible human beings, maybe Steph is the most deserving to have a moment like that,鈥 coach Jesse Marsch said. 鈥淪o I鈥檓 really happy for him. I think from somewhere his parents are looking down and they saw that.鈥

In 2019, Eust谩quio committed to play for the Canadian national team.

鈥淭oday, we have to enjoy the fact that we made everybody back home proud,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 am over the moon.鈥

In the next moment, Eust谩quio was quick to come down to Earth.

鈥淚 don’t want to say that the job is finished,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e have to be humble, we have to recover well and we know that in six days we鈥檙e going to have a very tough team.鈥

Next up, Canada plays either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4.

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to get a chance now at a true Goliath next weekend,鈥 Johnston said, 鈥渁nd that鈥檚 something that we鈥檙e all extremely excited about.鈥

Eust谩quio couldn’t see the clock to know about how much time was left. Even during the hydration breaks, he wasn’t sure.

鈥淭here was a little bit of frustration knowing that we didn鈥檛 score and they were probably going to score if they kept pushing,鈥 he said, 鈥渂ut Jesse was just trying to remain calm, tell the team to keep pushing.鈥

The Canadians got a boost when their star player, Alphonso Davies, removed his substitute bib and entered in the 75th minute. He hadn’t played in a World Cup match since injuring his hamstring in May with Bayern Munich in a Champions League semifinal.

Eust谩quio had served as captain in Davies’ absence during the group-stage matches.

鈥淲e have a special group. We feel like we are brothers,鈥 Eust谩quio said. 鈥淲hen we fight for each other, when we play for each other, special things like this can happen.鈥

Ryan O’Hearn homers twice, helps Pirates avoid sweep with 9-4 win over Reds /sports/2026/06/ryan-ohearn-homers-twice-helps-pirates-avoid-sweep-with-9-4-win-over-reds/ Sun, 28 Jun 2026 23:00:51 +0000 /?p=29388096&preview=true&preview_id=29388096 PITTSBURGH (AP) 鈥 Ryan O鈥橦earn homered twice in a game for the third time in the majors and drove in four runs to help the Pittsburgh Pirates avoid a series sweep with a 9-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

O鈥橦earn put Pittsburgh in front 5-4 in the fifth inning with a 421-foot drive to right off Brady Singer (3-7).

After 65-minute rain delay with one out in the bottom of the eighth, Pierce Johnson walked Bryan Reynolds and Nick Gonzales before O’Hearn hit a three-run shot to make it 8-4. Esmerlyn Vald茅z followed O’Hearn by homering for a third straight game.

Mitch Keller (6-5) went six innings for the Pirates, allowing four runs 鈥 three earned 鈥 and five hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

X-rays were inconclusive on after he was hit by a pitch from Keller in the sixth inning and forced to leave the game. Manager Terry Francona said Su谩rez will have a CT scan on Monday after traveling with the team to Milwaukee for the start of a four-game series against the Brewers.

Singer gave up five runs and nine hits with six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings for the Reds.

Pittsburgh scored four runs before recording an out in the second inning. Gonzales and O鈥橦earn started with a pair of singles before Vald茅z made it 1-0 on a ground-rule double. Tyler Callihan then sent a sinker 412 feet to right for a three-run homer.

Elly De La Cruz reached safely on a fielding error by Pirates second baseman Brandon Lowe to begin the fourth. A double by Sal Stewart put two runners in scoring position. JJ Bleday took advantage with a two-run single that dropped into right field and cut the deficit to 4-2.

Tyler Stephenson lined an RBI double past a diving Callihan in left field and scored on Edwin Arroyo鈥檚 single down the line in right, tying it at 4 in the fifth.

The Pirates twice failed to score with the bases loaded and no outs. Konnor Griffin grounded into a force out, Lowe struck out and Reynolds grounded to third in the fourth. In the seventh, Henry Davis popped up to short and Griffin hit into a double play.

Up next

Reds: LHP Nick Lodolo (2-2, 5.59 ERA) will take the mound Monday for the first of a four-game set in Milwaukee against Brewers LHP Robert Gasser (1-3, 4.50 ERA).

Pirates: RHP Braxton Ashcraft (7-3, 3.07 ERA) will start the first of a four-game series in Philadelphia on Monday against Phillies RHP Aaron Nola (3-4, 5.58 ERA).

Manager Terry Francona said Su谩rez will have a CT scan on Monday after traveling with the team to Milwaukee for the start of a four-game series against the Brewers.

鈥淩ight now, it鈥檚 very swollen. So, the X-ray doesn鈥檛 say anything because it鈥檚 too swollen,鈥 Su谩rez said. 鈥淲e鈥檒l see what is in there. Right now, obviously, I feel a lot better than when I got hit. I thought he hit me really good. Was painful, but right now, I feel a lot better. So, I pray to God for nothing to come up.鈥

Su谩rez was hit by a 92.4 mph fastball from Mitch Keller with two outs in the sixth inning. The designated hitter was checked by Francona before slowly making his way to first base. Nathaniel Lowe came in for Su谩rez’s next at bat in the eighth.

鈥淚t swelled up really rapidly,鈥 Francona said. 鈥淭he trainers’ hope was that maybe it hit a blood vessel. … He’s very tender. So, we’ll get more information tomorrow.鈥

In his 13th major league season, Su谩rez is batting .208 with eight home runs and 29 RBIs. The 34-year-old was named an All-Star for the second time last season.

Su谩rez propelled Cincinnati to a 9-7 win on Saturday. With the Reds down a run and two outs in the ninth, he drove a 2-2 sinker from Gregory Soto 344 feet to right field for a three-run homer.
