Jean Carroll calls for Trump to pay $5.8M after high court appeal fails /national/2026/07/writer-e-jean-carroll-calls-for-trump-to-pay-5-8m-after-high-court-appeal-fails/ Wed, 01 Jul 2026 05:38:13 +0000 /?p=29394629&preview=true&preview_id=29394629 NEW YORK (AP) — Advice columnist E. Jean Carroll asked a judge Tuesday to require President Donald Trump to pay her $5 million from a jury verdict that concluded Trump sexually abused her in the 1990s and defamed her after she publicly described the attack in 2019.

Lawyers for Carroll filed papers in Manhattan federal court to say Trump is unjustly trying to further delay release of the money after the Supreme Court refused Monday to hear an appeal of the 2023 civil jury verdict.

The amount has grown to nearly $5.8 million with interest and should be required by the court to be disbursed, the lawyers wrote, saying Trump has resumed his defamatory attacks against Carroll as his lawyers considered asking the high court to reconsider its decision.

The jury reached its verdict in a trial that Trump did not attend after Carroll testified that she was sexually abused by Trump in spring 1996 in the dressing room of a midtown Manhattan luxury department store after a flirtatious and friendly chance encounter between them turned violent.

Carroll, 82, first talked about the attack publicly in 2019 while Trump was president. He repeatedly insisted that he never knew Carroll. He also accused her of trying to sell books at his expense and having political motives.

Trump promised on social media Monday to keep fighting what he called a “Weaponization and Lawfare Case†after the Supreme Court’s rejection became known.

They said that lawyers for Trump contacted Carroll’s attorneys minutes after Trump published a response to the high court’s action, asking that the payout be delayed while the Supreme Court is asked to reconsider its decision.

But Carroll’s lawyers — Roberta Kaplan, D. Brandon Trice and Maximilian T. Crema — said in their court filing that there was no reason to delay the payment, especially since the Supreme Court expressed no division in its decision not to hear the case.

“To date, Carroll has agreed to each of Defendant’s many requests to delay the payment he owes her. Given the extraordinary lengths he has taken to avoid such payments and that each of those efforts has been denied in full, that cooperation ends today. It is time for him to pay Carroll,†they wrote.

Lawyers for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump is also appealing $83 million in defamation compensation granted to Carroll from a separate Manhattan jury after a January 2024 trial at which Trump briefly testified.

At that trial, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, who is unrelated to Carroll’s attorney, required that jury to accept the findings of the previous jury and only determine how much money, if any, Trump owed Carroll for comments he made about her as president.

Roof of tutoring center collapses in eastern Pakistan, killing at least 14 children, police say /world/2026/07/roof-of-tutoring-center-collapses-in-eastern-pakistan-killing-at-least-14-children/ Wed, 01 Jul 2026 05:35:37 +0000 /?p=29392481&preview=true&preview_id=29392481 LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — A roof collapse at a tutoring center under construction in eastern city of Lahore on Tuesday killed at least 14 schoolchildren, police and rescue officials said.

Eight other children were injured and being treated at a hospital, senior police official Faisal Kamran said, adding that the owner of the tutoring center and another person have been arrested.

Kamran said rescuers were searching through the rubble after receiving reports that more children could be trapped beneath the debris. He said the tutoring center was housed in an aging building and that the roof of an unfinished second floor apparently collapsed because of poor construction quality.

, where construction standards are often poorly enforced. Many structures are built with substandard materials, and safety regulations are frequently ignored to reduce costs.

Witnesses said ambulances and rescue workers rushed to the scene after the roof collapsed. Residents also joined the search, using shovels and their bare hands to remove rubble in an effort to reach children trapped beneath the debris.

Hours later, as the bodies of the children were being handed over to their families, scenes of anguish unfolded outside hospitals and in the neighborhood on the outskirts of Lahore where the private tutoring center was located in a house. Parents wept over the loss of their children, while mothers and other female relatives cried and beat their chests in grief.

Most of the victims lived nearby, and funeral prayers were expected later Tuesday.

Grief was mixed with anger as residents demanded stern punishment for the owner of the tutoring center, blaming him for operating classes in what they described as an aging and unsafe building. Dozens of mourners were seen gathering outside the victims’ homes to offer condolences.

“We don’t know whose home to visit first to offer condolences for the loss of their children,†resident Zafar Iqbal said as he moved from one bereaved family’s home to another nearby street.

Lahore is the capital of Pakistan’s most populous Punjab province, where many parents send their children to private tutoring centers in the afternoon and evening.

Pakistan’s and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the collapse of the roof of an evening school building in Lahore. In separate statements, they offered condolences to the families of the victims, prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured, and said effective safety measures were needed to prevent similar tragedies.

Giants 3B Matt Chapman leaves game with abdominal strain, set for MRI on Wednesday /sports/2026/07/giants-3b-matt-chapman-leaves-game-with-abdominal-strain-set-for-mri-on-wednesday/ Wed, 01 Jul 2026 05:24:22 +0000 /?p=29394680&preview=true&preview_id=29394680 PHOENIX (AP) — San Francisco third baseman Matt Chapman to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night because of an abdominal strain that he suffered in the sixth inning.

The five-time Gold Glove winner is scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury.

The 33-year-old Chapman charged in on a ground ball, fielded it cleanly with his bare hand and threw out Gabriel Moreno at first to end the sixth, but was in obvious pain as he gingerly walked to the dugout.

Chapman said his abdominal area had been bothering him some over the past several weeks, but the pain had been manageable until Tuesday’s incident.

“It’s been hot and cold where I’m trying to figure out what’s going on,†Chapman said. “I made that bare-handed play and that was the first time that one specific play made me cringe and go down a little bit, where I was actually in a lot of pain.â€

He batted in the seventh and was retired on an infield pop out before leaving the game.

Chapman is batting .235 this season with seven homers and 42 RBIs.

Mexico ends a 40-year knockout drought, beats Ecuador 2-0 to reach the round of 16 /sports/2026/07/mexico-ecuador-world-cup-match-delayed-by-an-storm-in-mexico-city/ Wed, 01 Jul 2026 05:22:37 +0000 /?p=29394061&preview=true&preview_id=29394061 MEXICO CITY (AP) — The 40-year wait is over. Mexicans had learned to live with defeats in the knockout stages of the . On seven occasions, El Tri fans were left heartbroken at this stage.

Not anymore.

Julián Quiñones and scored within a nine-minute span in the first half and defeated Ecuador 2-0 on Tuesday night to break a four-decade drought in the knockout stage and progress to the round of 16.

Quiñones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and Jiménez added a goal in the 31st for the Mexicans, who had not won a knockout-stage match since defeating Bulgaria in the round of 16 when they hosted the tournament in 1986. Mexico coach Javier Aguirre was one of the starting midfielders in that team in ’86.

“It means a lot to me because I am one of those who could not progress in the knockout stage,†Aguirre said. “We are in the round of 16 and it is happening a great connection with the fans. We are like a family. It is spectacular.â€

Mexico lost seven consecutive times at that same stage from 1994 to 2018 and didn’t advance past the group stage in 2022.

Aguirre, who returned as Mexico’s head coach in August of 2024, was an assistant in 1994 and was the coach in 2002 and 2010.

“We will be on high alert from here until Sunday. We will try to have the players recover from this and we will see if we are able to win again,†Aguirre said.

For Quiñones, it was a third goal in the tournament and he is now El Tri’s second-highest scorer in World Cup history behind Luis “Matador†Hernández and Javier “Chicharito†Hernández, who scored four each.

Quiñones, who was the scoring leader in the Saudi Pro League last season, has become the spark in the attack that Mexico lacked in previous World Cups.

“I am just happy with the result, that is all that matters now,†said Quiñones, who is playing in his first World Cup with Mexico.

The 29-year-old forward arrived in the country from Colombia at age 17 and became a naturalized citizen in 2023.

“Life is about struggle and fight until you get what you want,†he said, “and I am taking full advantage of the opportunity that I got.â€

Jiménez scored his second goal of the tournament and has 47 with the national team to break a tie with Jared Borgetti. He is five away from tying “Chicharito†Hernández as the all-time leading scorer for Mexico.

Mexico will play another home match Sunday against the winner of Wednesday’s .

Playing at the iconic Azteca Stadium, the Mexican squad boasts an undefeated record across 10 World Cup matches. Mexico has just two official losses at the venue — the last being a World Cup qualifying defeat to Honduras on Sept. 6, 2013.

With the win, Mexico extended its unbeaten run to 12 games, dating back to a friendly loss against Paraguay in November.

Mexico also became the first CONCACAF side to eliminate a team from CONMEBOL in a World Cup knockout match. Teams from South America won the previous five meetings.

The match started one hour after the original scheduled time due to a thunderstorm.

It was the second match of the tournament delayed . A storm during the France-Iraq match at Philadelphia on June 22 caused a 2-hour, 11-minute suspension at the end of the first half. ___

Mariners have big sixth inning to back Woo in an 8-3 victory over the Angels /sports/2026/07/mariners-have-big-sixth-inning-to-back-woo-in-an-8-3-victory-over-the-angels/ Wed, 01 Jul 2026 04:58:37 +0000 /?p=29394641&preview=true&preview_id=29394641 SEATTLE (AP) — Julio Rodriguez had three hits and scored twice, Bryan Woo took a shutout into the seventh inning and the Seattle Mariners put together a five-run sixth on Tuesday night to beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-3.

Rodriguez and Colt Emerson both had three of Seattle’s 13 hits. Randy Arozarena and Cole Young scored two runs apiece.

Woo (7-6) allowed just four hits and struck out five in 6 1/3 innings. The Angels’ first two runs in their three-run seventh were charged to him after he gave way to reliever Eduard Bazardo. That ended Woo’s streak of home shutout innings at 32 1/3, which stretched over a span of five games dating to May 6 against Atlanta.

Michael Rucker pitched a scoreless eighth for the Mariners, and Andres Munoz set L.A. down in order in the ninth.

The Mariners batted around in the sixth, with their first five hitters reaching base on four hits and one walk. Rodriguez and Josh Naylor both singled, then Arozarena singled to score Rodriguez with the first run and chase Los Angeles starter Jose Soriano (8-5).

Cal Raleigh walked to load the bases, and Young singled to right, scoring Naylor. Arozarena scored on a wild pitch to Emerson. Raleigh and Young came home on Weston Wilson’s single to right.

Los Angeles rallied with three in the seventh, the last two of those scoring on Zach Neto’s single to right.

Seattle answered with three in the bottom of the seventh. Emerson’s single that floated just above the outstretched glove of Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel drove in the first two.

Wade Meckler had two of the Angels’ six hits.

Up next

Los Angeles will send RHP Walbert Urena (5-6, 3.14 ERA) to the mound on Thursday against Seattle RHP Bryce Miller (3-2, 1.97 ERA) to wrap up the three-game series. Wednesday will be an unusual midseries off day because of the World Cup round of 32 game between Belgium and Senegal being played right across the street at Lumen Field /Seattle Stadium.

Democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeats longtime US House incumbent in Colorado /national/2026/07/colorado-democrats-choose-between-insurgent-progressives-and-veteran-incumbents/ Wed, 01 Jul 2026 04:50:45 +0000 /?p=29391321&preview=true&preview_id=29391321 Democratic socialist Melat Kiros beat U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette in a Colorado House primary Tuesday, a stunning victory for the first-time candidate against a nearly 30-year incumbent and another win for the Democratic Socialists of America.

Kiros, 29, is the latest candidate to rise from the party’s left flank and boot an incumbent, with two self-described democratic socialists last week in New York. The Colorado district covers the dark blue city of Denver, and Kiros is expected to win in November and reach Congress in January.

The victory helped answer a question that’s : Are voters gravitating toward a younger, more progressive generation of leaders?

Elsewhere, however, Sen. John Hickenlooper successfully fended off a primary challenge from self-fashioned “insurgent progressive†state Sen. Julie Gonzales.

And while a smaller divide separated the two Democrats competing for U.S. House in the state’s lone swing district, the candidate considered more progressive, state Rep. Manny Rutinel, won.

In the governor’s race, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser and U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet struggled to meaningfully distinguish their agendas. Instead, the two Democrats accused each other of pulling punches against Trump. Weiser won Tuesday.

Kiros’ victory is part of a nascent groundswell from the left

DeGette had comfortably controlled her House seat — as a more progressive lawmaker herself — in Denver for nearly 30 years, then came Kiros.

The early signs showed in a March Democratic assembly, a process to decide which candidates get on the primary ballot. Both candidates qualified for the ballot, but first-time candidate Kiros blew past DeGette.

She won again Tuesday, an even bigger jolt for the Democratic establishment and DeGette, who’s been a progressive lawmaker herself.

Kiros joins two democratic socialists and a progressive who beat out establishment-backed candidates — two of whom were incumbants — in Democratic House primaries in New York.

Similar to the New York races, Kiros had the endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders, while DeGette was backed by Colorado’s established Democratic House delegation.

Kiros’s victory helps cement the nascent but clear uprising of democratic socialist candidates, which has made some party leaders uneasy.

DeGette had argued that experience in Congress is needed right now to combat Trump, while Kiros, a former attorney, accused DeGette of ineffectiveness.

Hickenlooper fends off ‘insurgent progressive’

That didn’t come as a surprise to the political world, though it dampened a broader wave of progressive candidates beating establish-backed Democrats across the country.

Gonzales, the state senator who challenged the more centrist Hickenlooper, had attacked him for being an “incrementalist†and had said she previously joined the Democratic Socialists of America but that her membership had lapsed.

After his victory, Hickenlooper quickly turned his attention to Trump and said he’d never lost an election and didn’t intend to in November.

“Coloradoans have once again made their voices clear. We are not going to accept Trump’s broken promises and cost of living emergency, or his constant corruption,†he said in a video posted to YouTube.

Rutinel to face GOP Rep. Gabe Evans in race key to House control

Colorado’s 8th Congressional District is relatively new, stretching from the northern suburbs of Denver up through farming country, and has flipped party control in recent elections.

Evans now holds the seat, after beating the Democratic incumbent in 2024.

Party leaders thought the more moderate Shannon Bird, a former state representative, was best equipped to challenge Evans. But Rutinel, who had the more progressive record, beat Bird Tuesday night.

The district is heavily Hispanic and poorer than much of the rest of the state, and that’s where Rutinel, who is Latino, planted a flag, arguing his personal story and more aggressive economic agenda would be more potent against Evans.

“This is the moment for all the kids out there who had the deck stacked against them,†Rutinel said in his victory speech. “I’m going to work with everything I have so that those kids have the same opportunities to live out the American Dream that I did.â€

Progressives could find new ally in governor’s mansion

Weiser, the state attorney general, won the Democratic primary Tuesday and is expecting to win come November. Term-limited Gov. Jared Polis will depart after two-terms governing with a more moderate touch, at times stymieing progressive state lawmakers.

Weiser, who formerly served in the presidential administrations of Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, is considered to be more sympathetic to his leftward flank. Bennet, the U.S. Senator who Weiser beat Tuesday, would likely have brought a similar change.

On the campaign trail, candidates struggled to show major differences in their political agendas, and instead often attacked each other over who could better stand up to Trump.

Weiser hammered his point home in a victory speech to ecstatic, sign-waving supporters who crowded around the candidate.

“In the face of a lawless bullying Trump administration trying to intimidate us, rip away our rights and freedoms,” Weiser said, “you made it clear that we need a leader who will fight back and never bend the knee.â€

After his loss, Bennet spoke to supporters. “Sometimes the harder path is the right path, even when it doesn’t lead where you’d hoped,” he said.

The three candidates seeking the Republican nomination included state Rep. Scott Bottoms, a further right state lawmaker. State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer was considered the more conventional Republican, while Victor Marx was something of a wild card candidate with an eclectic past. Kirkmeyer and Marx were locked in a tight race that was too early to call Tuesday night. ___ Associated Press reporter Mead Gruver in Fort Collins, Colorado, contributed to this report.
