Police: Angry Md. motorist beats cyclist, throws bike tire into woods

WASHINGTON — A crash between聽a bicycle and a SUV in Davidsonville, Maryland聽escalated into a road rage incident, leaving the bike rider with a broken arm and rib, Anne Arundel County police said.

The incident occurred聽at around 11 a.m. Saturday at St. George Barber and Governors Bridge Roads.

Police said the cyclist was riding south on St. George Barber, approaching Governors Bridge, when an聽SUV approached behind him. As the vehicle drew closer, the cyclist waved him to pass, police said.

Upon reaching a curve in the roadway, the cyclist traveled to the middle of the road in order to be visible to oncoming traffic and to block the SUV from passing on this curve.

But the SUV tried to pass the cyclist on the left side, which police said spurred the collision.

After the crash, police alleged, the SUV driver beat the cyclist, picked up the bike鈥檚 tire and threw it into nearby woods, and then left the scene.

The cyclist, a 59-year-old from Edgewater, was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center with injuries to his leg, and a broken arm and a broken rib. Police said the man聽was in stable condition.

The driver, Michael John Moody, 61, of Davidsonville, was detained near聽the scene. He聽has since been聽charged with second-degree assault, in addition to numerous traffic offenses, police said.
